Am I a Candidate for PRP Therapy?

With platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, we use the platelets from your blood concentrated in plasma and inject the solution into your body to boost and speed healing. This treatment has many applications.

At Bluetail Medical Group, with locations in Missouri, Florida, Indiana, Wisconsin, and California, our team of orthopedic specialists provides nonsurgical regenerative therapies and rehabilitation treatment options, including PRP therapy.

PRP basics

Your blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets (with associated growth factors) and plasma (the suspension everything else is stored in). Your body accepts the injections because the PRP comes from your body, which recognizes the components.

The PRP process

When you visit us for platelet-rich plasma therapy, the process goes like this:

First, we make sure you’re comfortable and prep your arm for a blood draw. We draw a vial of blood, and let you relax while a technician places the blood vial in a centrifuge.

The centrifuge spins the vial to separate the different components of the blood. We discard the cells we don’t use and concentrate the platelets in the remaining plasma.

Then we inject the PRP into your body at the site of pain, desired rejuvenation, or rehabilitation. The platelets go to work attracting more growth factors to the site of the injection, and faster healing begins.

The growth factors help repair trauma to tissues, and promote regrowth and regeneration of different tissues.

Who is a good candidate for PRP therapy?

You might be a good candidate for PRP therapy if you have any of the following issues or health conditions:

A sports or accident injury

Sports medicine providers typically inject PRP into the area around a joint or near a tear in a ligament or tendon to speed healing.

Postsurgical treatment

After an operation, your body needs all the help it can get. Growth factors from PRP communicate with ones already in your body and attract them to the surgical site to help you heal faster.

Facial rejuvenation

Sun, acne, smoking, and other lifestyle factors can age your face. We can combine a rejuvenating facial with a PRP application to boost the building blocks of your skin, making it smoother, fresher, and younger.

Hair restoration

PRP has also been helpful in increasing hair growth after a period of hair loss. Typically, PRP is applied during a scalp microneedling session to maximize its impact and encourage hair follicles to resume new hair generation.

Arthritis and joint pain

PRP has been beneficial for people struggling with small and large joint pain from osteoarthritis, lessening inflammation and reducing pain levels.
